New York Fashion Week
FINALLY, it’s that time of the year! The color on the leaves is changing and New York Fashion Week 2023 is here and time has flown by since last fall but we are here to keep up with the major trends, new designers and new collections. Remember, Fashion pauses for no one. While some fly to the streets of New York, others stay on top of their phones constantly checking for the newest updates and peeks at the newest collections that fashion week has to offer. But who do we thank for this iconic fashion week?
A brief summary
Eleanor Lambert, press director of the American fashion industry’s first promotional organization, the New York Dress Institute. Formally known as “Press Week”, NYFW was created to distract the world from World War II as the fashion industry was at a pause. Fashion industry insiders were unable to travel to Paris to see French fashion shows. Eleanor had a composed idea: Press week would be held at the Plaza Hotel, press only. Anyone interested in purchasing would have to be scheduled separately as fashion talent would finally be recognized. Prior to Press Week, regional reporters had been unable to cover New York’s fashion scene without shadowing buyers in their local stores.
However, over the next few decades, the packed schedule of New York Fashion Week helped to establish the fashion force as some of today’s big name brands developed. Cultural currents also transformed the nature of the shows too. Disaster struck during the COLLAPSED CEILING at the 1991 Michael Kors show called for a change during NYFW as it needed a new location. Therefore, this developed the idea of two white tents in Bryant Park to host the majority of the NYFW shows. The rest of the 90’s developed memorable fashion moments like the spring of 1993 where Perry Ellis had Kate Mossstroll in a grunge-inspired piece.
But in 2001, for the first time ever NYFW was canceled due to the aftermath of 9/11.
The following years of the 2000’s brought upcoming designers like Alexander Wang and Jason Wu. With the modernization of technology NYFW developed into what it is today as more people have been able to gain access to the shows. While the purpose of fashion week was originally to persuade viewers to buy styles immediately, with models of the past even wearing numbers on their outfits so people could easily find the exact look later, now the shopping world is completely different.
Here is everything you need to know about this years NYFW at Spring Studios:

Transgender Model, 10, becomes the youngest model to walk the New York Fashion Week runway. Known as Noella, who will be modeling for Mel Atkinson (designer for transgender clothing) As Noella walked in February, she will make a fall appearance revolutionizing the modeling industry. Trans Clothing Company was started in 2018 when a close friend came out to Atkinson. Atkinson decided to build a fashion company that catered to trans women’s needs in clothing, especially early in transition. Now, TCC is an all-inclusive brand with clothes for trans and gender nonconforming people of all types.
Getting your hands on designer pieces is only a tap away! Afterpay. A company focused on “Buy Now Pay Later” will now be an official presenting partner at NYFW for the third season in a row allowing the viewers more access to these statement pieces. After pay has partnered with five designers. Jonathan Simkhai, Kim Shui, AnOnlyChild, ALTU and The Blinds. They are offering NFT’S to exclusive access to one-of-a-kind phygital (physical and digital) collectibles. Each NFT will retail for $100 and, for the first time, Afterpay will allow consumers to purchase the NFTs by splitting the payment into four interest-free installments.
Despite the fact that there are trends that truly do cover starting with one season then onto the next (for example plaid is famous each fall and florals a given for spring), we realize that this September, we will undoubtedly see new, new emphases of the staples we love, which will definitely a must have for our closets! Tune in and find out next year’s trends!
